The USS Hornet (CV-12) aircraft carrier is a museum ship with exhibits from the NASA Apollo moon exploration missions, (the Hornet recovered the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 space capsules), and several retired aircraft from the Second World War and the transonic and early supersonic jet propulsion period. A number of compartments contain exhibits concerning contemporary carriers that are supported by related associations. The flight deck, hangar deck, and first deck below are open for self-guided tours. Docent-led tours are available into the ship’s navigation and flight deck control areas of the island and down into one of the engineering spaces containing two of the four ship’s propulsion turbines. It is located on the southernmost pier of the former Naval Air Station Alameda. Open daily 10 AM to 4 PM.

The Apollo 11 crew await pickup by a helicopter from the USS Hornet, prime recovery ship for the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. The fourth man in the life raft is a United States Navy underwater demolition team swimmer. All four men are wearing Biological Isolation Garments (BIG). The Apollo 11 Command Module "Columbia," with astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. splashed down at 11:49 a.m. (CDT), 24 July 1969, about 812 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii and only 12 nautical miles from the USS Hornet.

Two US Navy Grumman TBF-1C Avengers from Torpedo Squadron 2 (VT-2) pass over the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-12) prior to entering the pattern for recovery on board the carrier. Note the mission markings on the aircraft, as well as the white dot on their tails indicating assignment to USS Hornet. VT-2 operated from Hornet during that carrier's initial combat actions between March and September 1944. This included the "Mission Beyond Darkness" in the June 1944 during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, as well as strikes against the Palaus, Carolines, the Bonin Islands, New Guinea, and the Marianas.
