The aim of this website is to locate, identify and document every historical Warplane preserved in Canada. Many contributors have assisted in the hunt for these aircraft to provide and update the data on this website. Photos are by the author unless otherwise credited. RCAF Station Camp Borden, c1959, inside a hangar with two Avro CF-100 Canuck Mk. 4A including (Serial No. 18197). 18197 was converted to an instructional airframe as of 11 August 1959 and assigned to Training Command at RCAF Station Camp Borden. The new serial number was 653 B. The aircraft was struck off strength on 12 June 1962. The port wing of a Dakota is visible. This Dakota had served with the RCAF's No. 101 (K) Unit at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia prior to being withdrawn from flying duties. (Chris Charland) Croil Hall is visible in the background. North American NA-61 Harvard Mk. 1, RCAF (Serial No. 1348), Initial Training School, Camp Borden, 30 July 1940. Although no Harvards are preserved at CFB Borden, many pilots trained on them here when Borden was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan collections of schools.

Avro 504K (Serial No. D8971), CF-CYC, G-CYCK, inside one of the BBMM's original Great War hangars.
The original Avro G-CYCK was registered as RAF (Serial No. H9717). It was built in England in 1918 and became part of the 1919 Imperial Gift . The Canadian registration was issued 23 November 1920 and the plane was flown in Camp Borden until destroyed in a Category A accident on 14 November 1921. It was struck off strength on 8 March 1922. The aircraft in the museum is painted as G-CYCK, but was actually ex RAF (Serial No. D8971), (also civil register CF-CYC). It passed through the hands of several owners, and was finally purchased from an owner in California to be restored by the Royal Canadian Air Force and went on to fly numerous flights for the 1967 Centennial airshow season. The reason the tail number CYCK was chosen to be painted on this airframe is unknown. (Bob Thompson)

Bell CH-136 Kiowa (Serial No. 136228), mounted on a pylon near the North Gate, Angus.
This CH-136 Kiowa is an ex-US Army OH-58A-BF (Serial No. 71-20912). It was accepted by the Canadian Forces on 28 Jun 1972, having logged just 5.5 flying hours. It flew with 430e Escadron tactique d'helicoptres at CFB Valcartier, Quebec as (Serial No.136247) until it was transferred to CFSATE Jan 1995 for use as a training aid. It was mounted on a pedestal at the main gate to CFB Borden sometime around Nov 1997 . Even though the display aircraft's original tail number was 247, it has been repainted as (Serial No. 136228) to commemorate the aircraft that No. 400 "City of Toronto" Tactical Helicopter Squadron used as it's 60th anniversary Kiowa in 1992. The original 228 is now a civilian aircraft, Reg. No. VH-OSX. (Bob Thompson)

Canadair CT-114 Tutor (Serial No. 114120).
Canadair CT-114 Tutor (Serial No. 114153). This aircraft was originally RCAF (Serial No. 2615)3 and was modified for use with the aerobatic teams . It is the only Tutor in existence which has been painted as, or flew with, the Golden Centennaires in 1967, as a backup plane for the Red Knight Tutor in 1969 and with the Snowbirds until 1976. As a Golden Centennaire, it flew in the same airshows as the Avro 504, (Serial No. CYCK), which is also on display in the museum. This Tutor was transferred to the museum and as a tribute to the aerobatic teams, was repainted in the RCAF Golden Centennaire colours. (Bob Thompson)

The museum aircraft is a DH.82C Tiger Moth, RCAF (Serial No. 8979), c/n 1781, manufactured by the de Havilland Company at Downsview, Toronto in 1942. The aircraft was eventually sold into the civil market in 1946 and registered as CF-EMT and after other the sale, was finally purchased and re-registered as C-GDPT in 1981. The registration number painted on the side of the museum aircraft is RCAF (Serial No. 4974), (and 4794 on the underside of the bottom wing). The actual DH.82C 4974 sustained Catagory C damage on 4 October 1941 while serving with No. 20 Elementary Flying Training School at Oshawa, Ontario. That airframe was struck off strength on 26 Aug 1943 and guillotined. At present, the reason Reg. No. 8979 is painted on the aircraft is a mystery. (Serial No. 4794) painted on the bottom of the port wing is a painting error since 4794 was actually registered to a Fleet Finch. (Bob Thompson)

This aviation handbook is designed to be used as a quick reference to the classic military heritage aircraft that have been flown by members of the Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and the Canadian Forces. The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active Canadian squadrons both at home and overseas. 100 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to Canadian service aircraft. For those who like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museum's current inventory or on display as gate guardians throughout Canada and overseas.
