Hawker Typhoon (Serial No. JP843) is being built at the VMAerospace facility in British Columbia with the goal of once again returning a Hawker Typhoon to the skies. The project is being constructed using surviving parts from Typhoon recoveries, factory drawings, and highly accurate reverse engineering practices to bring the aircraft back to its former glory. It is the Typhoon Legacy Co. Ltd. Team's goal to see JP843 fly with the mighty Napier Sabre engine, and they are investing heavily in their work to make this happen.
Hawker Typhoon JP843 was the fourth production batch of 600 aircraft built by Gloster Aircraft during 1943, deliveries for this batch started 4 May 1943 and ended Dec 1943. It was one of 3,317 Typhoons constructed during the Second World War. JP843 was originally fitted with a “Car Door” canopy, four faired 20-mm Hispano cannons and early exhaust fairings. JP843 was delivered from 51 Maintenance Unit (MU), RAF Station Lichfield to No. 197 Squadron, Tangmere on 22 Sep 1943. In Dec 1943, the operational records book reports JP843 as OV-T. On 3 Jan 1944, JP843 was flown by Flying Officer K.J. Harding on a Rhubarb to Yvrench, France, with three other Typhoons, each armed with two 250 lb bombs. Harding became separated from the others in the target area and, returning alone, was intercepted by four Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters which he managed to outrun despite sustaining two hits. The aircraft sustained Category B damage, which was repaired, and the aircraft is reported as being back in operations by 11 Jan 1944.
In Feb 1944 the unit saw an influx of new Typhoons fitted with sliding hoods and armed with RP-3 ground attack rockets with 60 lb High Explosive heads. It is suspected that JP843 was sidelined for a short period before being sent to 13 MU on 22 Feb 1944, and then on to Gloster on 25 Apr 1944. It is likely that both of these allocations concerned canopy and RP-3 modifications. On return from Gloster, JP843 was reported at 83 Group Support Unit (GSU), Redhill 8 Jun 1944 and allocated to 609 Squadron. JP843 does not appear in 609 Squadron's Operational Record Book for June 1944, but it does appear briefly with 198 Squadron marked as “K” when it is reported as having returned with engine trouble. It is likely that JP843 was “borrowed” from 609 Squadron by 198 Squadron during the hectic month of June 1944, but it does return to 609 Squadron between 8 July and 27 July 1944. JP843 was lost during operations along with P/O Price on 27 Jul 1944.

Canadair CL-41/CT-114 Tutor (Serial No. 114187), between Millennium Park and College of the Rockies. Canadair 114187, was TOS on 2 June 1966. On 8 January 1971 it was renumbered from RCAF No. 26187. It was operated by 3 CFFTS at CFB Portage, Manitoba. Later at ATESS, CFB Mountain View, Ontario, with a tail from No. 114063. It was reported as available for sale to museums in May 2005. Components were seen stored outside at CFB Mountain View, Ontario, in October 2005. This Tutor was moved to Norwood, Ontario by December 2005, where it was slated to be part of a Snowbirds static display. It was stored outside at Norwood-Kelly airfield in August 2009. SOS: 23 August 2005. It was preserved for a time at the Memorial Military Museum, Campbellford, Ontario, before being moved to Creston, BC.

It was last operated by the South African Air Force, and is currently in storage in Seattle, Washington, in very good, original, unrestored condition. The aircraft is to be moved to Fort St. John, BC where it will be restored to ground running, taxi capable condition in the short term, with long term plans for full restoration to flying status. In 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy occupied Attu and Kiska, two islands in the Aleutians which were part of Alaska. RCAF home defense P-40 squadrons saw combat over the Aleutians, assisting the USAAF. The RCAF initially sent 111 Squadron, flying the Kittyhawk Mk. I, to the US base on Adak island. During the drawn-out campaign, 12 Canadian Kittyhawks operated on a rotational basis from a new, more advanced base on Amchitka, (121 km) southeast of Kiska. 14 and 111 Sqns took turns flying patrols from Amchitka. During a major attack on Japanese positions at Kiska on 25 September 1942, Squadron Leader Ken Boomer shot down a Japanese Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe floatplane. The RCAF also purchased 12 P-40Ks directly from the USAAF while in the Aleutians. After the Japanese threat diminished, these two RCAF squadrons returned to Canada and eventually transferred to England without their Kittyhawks.

In early 1945 pilots from No. 133 Squadron operating P-40N fighters out of Patricia Bay, near Victoria, intercepted and destroyed two Japanese balloon bombs, which were designed to cause wildfires on the North American mainland. On 21 February, Pilot Officer E. E. Maxwell shot down a balloon, which landed on Sumas Mountain in Washington State. On 10 March, Pilot Officer J. 0. Patten destroyed a balloon near Saltspring Island, BC. The last interception took place on 20 April 1945 when Pilot Officer P.V. Brodeur from 135 Squadron out of Abbotsford, shot down a balloon over Vedder Mountain.

The aircraft was too late for the war but was with Spartan Airways, mapping the north. It was then used as a training aid for Air Cadets in Northern Ontario and eventually moved to BC where it was restored. CF-HMJ made its first flight after restoration on 16 June 2014 at Victoria International Airport, BC. The original LR503 served with No. 105 Sqn, RAF and later flew on a publicity tour of Canada. This aircraft was built by Airspeed in the UK in 1948 and was later operated by Spartan Air Services from 1954 to 1963. Vancouver, British Columbia. This Mosquito will join the aircraft collection at the Okanagan-based KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence in 2022. It will be joined by a Hawker Tempest Mk. II and a Douglas DC-3.

Hawker Tempest Mk. II (Serial No. MW376) is being restored at Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia. Built in 1944, this ex-Indian Air Force Tempest is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 instead of the type's Bristol Centaurus. It is being made airworthy.

This aviation handbook is designed to be used as a quick reference to the classic military heritage aircraft that have been flown by members of the Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and the Canadian Forces. The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active Canadian squadrons both at home and overseas. 100 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to Canadian service aircraft. For those who like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museum's current inventory or on display as gate guardians throughout Canada and overseas.
