Avro 683 Lancaster Mk. X (Serial No. FM213), C/N 3414, painted as (Serial No. KB726), Reg. No. C-GVRA. This aircraft was built at Victory Aircraft, Malton in July 1945 and was later converted to an RCAF Mk. 10MR configuration. In 1952 it has a serious accident and received a replacement wing centre section from a Lancaster that had flown in the air war over Germany. It served as a maritime patrol aircraft, with No. 405 Squadron, Greenwood, Nova Scotia and No. 107 Rescue Unit, Torbay, Newfoundland for many years, until it was retired from the RCAF in late 1963. With help from the Sulley Foundation in 1977, it was acquired from the Royal Canadian Legion in Goderich, Ontario, where it had been on outside display. Eleven years passed before it was completely restored and flew again on 24 Sep 1988. The Lancaster is dedicated to the memory of P/O Andrew Mynarski, VC, and is referred to as the “Mynarski Memorial Lancaster”. It was withdrawn from RCAF service in 1958 and purchased in 1960 by a trio of men from Nanton, Alberta with a view to building a war museum in their town. Avro 683 Lancaster Mk. XMP (Serial No. KB882). KB882 was one of 430 Lancasters built by Victory Aircraft at Malton, Ontario, in 1945 and delivered to Britain. the aircraft joined No. 428 Squadron RCAF in March of that year. Flown on six operational sorties over Germany, the aircraft was returned to Canada in June 1945 and entered storage. In 1952, the aircraft was modified to Mk 10P configuration and flew with No. 408 Squadron, RCAF. The Lancaster was modified with 'state of the art' SHORAN radar navigation equipment and served a vital role mapping Canada's north. In 1964, the aircraft was purchased by the City of Edmundston, New Brunswick and has since been outside on display at the Municipal Airport. KB882 is still in its RCAF aerial mapping configuration. In October 2017 this aircraft was moved from Edmundston, New Brunswick to the National Museum of the RCAF at CFB Trenton, Ontario.

Avro 683 Lancaster Mk. B.X (Serial No. KB839), 696. Built in Malton, Ontario in 1944, this aircraft flew 26 bombing sorties from the UK with RCAF No. 419 "Moose" Squadron. It was nicknamed "Daisy" after a dog in a popular comic strip. KB839 sustained damage on two occasions but survived the war and later flew with No. 409 "Goose" Squadron in Canada. It was modified with a longer (31-inch) nose to facilitate the installation of cameras for arctic mapping and reconnaissance duties, and the nose, dorsal and tail turrets were removed. KB839 was last flown on 11 Mar 1964, and retired in Greenwood. In the summer of 1987, its four engines and propellers were donated to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum for use on FM213, VRA, currently one of only two flying Lancasters in the world. The restoration crew have returned this aircraft to its wartime configuration by removing the 31-inches from the nose and extensively refurbishing the bomber. An accurate reproduction of a Frazer-Nash nose turret and a dorsal turret will be added in 2016. Greenwood Military Aviation Museum, CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia.

Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4/Z, (Wk. Nr. 10132) , CD+LZ, 2./JG 5, Stab II./JG 54, incorporates parts of (Wk. Nr. 26129). CD+LZ was allocated to JG5 in May/June 1942, where it was assigned to Hauptmann Horst Carganico, an air ace with 15 victories serving with 6. /JG 5. On 8 August 1942, his aircraft was hit in the fuselage, wings and the oil cooler by gunfire, during an air combat above the Arctic port of Murmansk in the Soviet Union, causing an emergency landing on enemy territory. Carganico was rescued by a crew flying a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch. The Soviets recovered 10132, and sent it to the “Museum of the North” in Severomorsk. In 1995, the Russians sold the plane to Aero Vintage Ltd. in England, where it was restored in its original colours. The restoration team made the decision to preserve the aircraft’s historical integrity, and thus the original bullet holes were not repaired and remain visible. One of the bullet hits is visible on one of the propeller blades for example. On 9 June 1999, the plane was transferred to Canada by Canadian Forces aircraft and delivered to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa, where it was reassembled and put on display. Messerschmitt Me 163B-1a Komet, RAF VF241. In March 1946, flight trials of the Messerschmitt Me 163B-1a VF241 were made mostly at the nearby airfield of Wisley, to avoid the busy circuit traffic at Farnborough, since the Me 163B was towed off as a glider by a Supermarine Spitfire and released at altitude to make its own way back to earth. These trials were primarily to explore the handling characteristics of the Me 163B’s tailless configuration, to provide information for other tailless designs on the drawing boards of British manufacturers in the post-war period. One of these aircraft came to Canada where it was also test flown as a glider.

(RCAF Photos via Ed Das Photos)
Messerschmitt Me 163B, (Wk. Nr. 191454), coded Yellow 11 of JG400, was surrendered at Husum, Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and shipped to the RAE. Designated RAF AM204, it was despatched from Farnborough to No. 6 MU, Brize Norton, on 12 July 1945 and used as a static exhibit in Hyde Park, London, during September 1945. It was later returned to No. 6 MU, being recorded there at the Census on 21 March 1946. On 25 June 1946, this Komet was transferred to No. 47 MU, Sealand, for packing and transfer to Canada. AM204 left Solford Docks on 28 August 1946, and arrived at Montréal on 9 September. One of the records for this aircraft has been interpreted as reading (Wk. Nr. 191452), but photographic and other documentary evidence supports the view that (Wk. Nr. 191454) is the correct identity. This aircraft was scrapped at Arnprior, Ontario, ca. 1957.

Messerschmitt Me 163B (Werk Nummer 191916 or 191914), RAF AM220, belonged to JG 400. It was surrendered at Husum, Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and shipped to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough and from there went to No. 6 MU, Brize Norton, on 1 August 1945. Recorded at No.6 MU in the Census of 21 March 1946 and despatched to No. 47 MU, Sealand, on 17 June 1945. It was crated at Sealand for shipment to Canada and left Salford Docks aboard the SS Manchester Commerce on 28 August 1946, arriving at Montréal on 9 September. It was stored in various locations until arriving at Rockcliffe where it is currently preserved in the Canada Air and Space Museum, Ottawa, Ontario, with the code ‘Yellow 26’. There is some doubt about the accuracy of the Werk-Nummer of this aircraft, which has also been reported both as 191913 and 191916. Canada Aviation and Space Museum, Ottawa, Ontario.
