Canadair CT-133 Silver Star, RCAF (Serial No. 113102). This Silver Star was built in 1953 and delivered to the RCAF with the tail number 21102. It initially served with No. 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron before later joining VU 33 Utility Squadron in 1983. After the RCAF was absorbed into the new Canadian Forces, the aircraft was renumbered with tail number 133102 on 11 Nov 1970. When VU 33 Squadron disbanded in 1992, the aircraft was transferred to No. 414 Squadron, which assumed VU 33’s duties. The aircraft was struck off strength in 2002 with the closure of No. 414 Squadron and later put on display

Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (Serial No. 133506), Serial No. 21506), PP-506. The T-33 Silver Star served with distinction in the RCAF from 1953 to 2005. It was the world’s first purpose built jet trainer and was developed from the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, the United States’ first operationally deployed jet fighter. As more advanced jets entered military service, a two-seat trainer version of the Shooting Star, the T-33, was developed to introduce aspiring pilots to jets.
The Canadair T-33 Silver Star resulted from a 1951 contract to build T-33s for the RCAF. The Canadair version incorporated a Rolls Royce Nene 10 turbojet instead of the Allison J33 used by Lockheed. Canadair produced 656 CT-133s and the jets were used extensively by the RCAF across the country and overseas. 418 (City of Edmonton) Squadron had two of them, based in the hangar that is now home to the Alberta Aviation Museum. Besides its primary pilot training role, some CT-133s were utilized for photo reconnaissance work, armament training and maritime support.
The Silver Star’s jet trainer role ended in 1976 but there were still fifty of the aircraft serving with the Canadian Forces in 2005. The last serving Canadair Silver Star was retired from the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment at CFB Cold Lake in 2005. It had been used as an ejection seat test bed for 46 years.

Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (Serial No. 133239), (Serial No. 21239), mounted on a pylon. This aircraft crashed on 6 May 1957, after taking off from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. The pilot noted the gear was up and the end of the runway was approaching when the engine flamed out. At the end of the runway there was a construction site and a mound of dirt approximately 4 or 5 feet high. The pilot carried out a belly landing sliding along when the left tank hit the mound of dirt ripping the tank off and sending the plane into a spin. Both the instructor and student were able to walk away with minimal bruising. The cause of the flame out was a malfunctioning fuel pump.

Canadair CT-133A Silver Star (Serial No. 133574), (Serial No. 21574). A variant of Lockheed’s F80 “Shooting Star”, the T-33A was the most widely used tandem two-seat advanced trainer in the world. The prototype flew for the first time on March 22, 1948. The T-33 was reliable and had forgiving flight properties. Its service life in the RCAF (and later the Canadian Forces) was extremely long. One of the more unusual roles it played was as an aerobatic demonstration aircraft – the RCAF’s Red Knight. Although the aircraft stopped being used as a trainer in 1976, there were still over 50 aircraft in the Canadian Forces inventory in 1995. The youngest of these airframes was then 37 years old and had exceeded its expected life by a factor of 2 1/2. During this period, the Canadair T-33 was employed in communication, target towing and enemy simulation.

Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (Serial No. 133038), (Serial No. 21038). Silver, VU32, RCN. The CT-133’s on display at the Shearwater Aviation Museum are two of the 656 CT-133’s built for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) by Canadair in Montreal in 1953. In 1954 the RCAF gave the Royal Canadian Navy the first of 16 CT-133’s to assist the Navy in preparing for the arrival of the Banshee jet fighter. The Museum’s two CT-133’s are painted in different paint schemes representing the first and last eras of the CT-133 at Shearwater. Serial No. 133038, is finished in a natural aluminum silver with tip tanks, nose and tail painted red for high visibility. This aircraft with Royal Canadian Navy markings is typical of the paint scheme of the CT-133 when it was flown by the Navy at Shearwater in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The Navy used the CT-133 for pilot proficiency training and towing targets. (SAM)

Canadair CT-133 Silver Star (Serial No. 133618), No. 434 Squadron. Serial No. 133618, is finished in low-visibility camouflage gray typical of the paint scheme when the “T- Bird”, as it was affectionately known, was last flown from Shearwater by Air Command’s No. 434 Squadron in 1994. Throughout its 40-year tenure at Shearwater the “T-Bird” provided target services for the Navy. The last CT-133 was retired from the Canadian Forces in the spring of 2002. (SAM)
