Warplanes of the USA: Washington, Bellingham to Yakima
Warplanes preserved in Washington
The surviving USAAC, USAAF, USAF, USN, USMC, USCG and WA ANG Warplanes on display in Washington can be found in a great number of locations. The major aviation museums in the state as well as private displays of historical Warplanes are listed here.
Bellingham, Heritage Flight Museum, 4165 Mitchell Way, 98226. The Heritage Flight Museum is a flying aircraft museum whose home base of operation is at the Bellingham International Airport. From the Bellingham hangar, the Museum displays, operates and maintains its many donated and closely associated aircraft. It also houses a growing collection of memorabilia donated by local families and individuals. Skagit Regional Airport.
Bell H-13 Sioux Helicopter (Serial No.). This aircraft was purchased by Heritage Flight Museum in 2006. This particular air frame was not a militarized model, but it has been restored to look like one.
Boeing PT-13 Stearman (Serial No.), 41. The Heritage Flight Museum Stearman was donated to the museum by Bill Anders in August of 2000.
Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog (Serial No.). This aircraft was purchased by Heritage flight museum in February of 2005, and came in the colours of a USAF O-1 typical of those flown during the Vietnam War, but was designated as a Cessna-Macone 305A.
Cessna O-2 Skymaster (Serial No. 68-6892), C/N 337M-0181, Reg. No. N3219K. This Skymaster was based at Hurlburt Field, Florida during the Vietnam era as a training aircraft.
Consolidated Vultee L-13 Grasshopper (Serial No.), LG-412. This airplane is a "fit-in-the-box" design. Using a Jeep as a standard unit of measurement, the military had the engineers designed the aircraft so it could be towed through a hole just large enough to accept a Jeep, with the wings folded back up against the tail, the stabilizer folded upward and the landing gear legs each rotated 180 degrees, which reduced its tread to that of a Jeep. This aircraft was donated by Bill & Valerie Anders to the Heritage Flight Museum in October of 2000.

Douglas AD-4NA Skyraider (BuNo. 12695), C/N 7765, painted as an USAF A-1, “The Proud American”, Reg. No. NX965AD. This Skyraider was built in the early-50’s. While with the US Navy it served aboard the USS Kearsarge with VA-115 in 1953, off the coast of Korea. The cease-fire was called before it saw combat action, however the aircraft of VA-115 conducted DMZ patrols for the duration of the cruise. When it returned stateside it was stationed with FASRON 8 at Alameda before transitioning to FAETULANT in Norfolk, VA from November 1954 until August 1955. She ultimately entered storage at Litchfield Park in August 1957. She was stricken from the Navy list in July 1958, and left storage for France in March 1960. While with the French l’Armee de l’Air, our Skyraider was based at Chateaudun but served in Algeria in 1962, Djibouti in 1968, Madagascar in 1971, and Chad in 1976. It was sent to storage with Sogerma in September 1979 where it remained until 1983. The Musee de l’Air at Le Buurget acquired the aircraft in 1984, and sold it to a private owner in Belgium in 1985. This aircraft was purchased by Heritage Flight Museum in February of 2004 and very arduously flown, towed, cargoed, towed again, and flown again back to Bellingham from Belgium. Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero replica. 20th Century Fox commissioned to have readily available American war birds converted to closely resemble those of the Japanese Navy. N7757 started life as a Harvard Mark IV, a Canadian version of the venerable North American T-6 advanced trainer. The attention to detail in the conversion to an A6M2-21 Zero included the addition of 7.7mm machine guns over the engine cowl, a 20mm canon on each wing, and a cockpit canopy modified to the specifications of the original Zero. Even the detail of adding the three bladed prop, a tail arresting hook, and converting the formerly fixed tail wheel to a fully functional retractable tail wheel were accomplished. This aircraft is on loan to the Heritage Flight Museum from Greg Anders’ Lost Aviators of Pearl Harbor. (Heritage Flight Museum)

North American AT6-F Texan (Serial No. 42615), 44. This AT-6F was built by North American Aviation in Dallas, TX and was delivered to the US Army Air Forces on 23 March 1945. According to its records it spent the next 10 years attached to various Air Base Wings at Wright-Patterson AFB, Amarillo AFB, and Edwards AFB where it was converted to an ET-6F, and was used as an electronics testing platform. In December of 1954 it was sent to Davis-Monthan AFB for storage, and was ultimately dropped from the USAF inventory in September of 1955. In June 1957, the aircraft was sold by the USAF. Alan Anders, purchased the aircraft for his own use and to fly in support of the Museum in 2002. (Heritage Flight Museum)
North American T6D Texan (Serial No. ), "Hog Wild Gunner". Built in 1942, this T-6D was one of several sold to the Spanish Air Force as a trainer and attack aircraft. Because it was in a foreign country, it was not re-purchased by the US Army Air Forces for upgrade to the T-6G variant. It was brought back to the USA in 1991 with several other T-6’s, named “The Spanish Fly”, and returned to flying service in 1992. Greg Anders, purchased the aircraft for his own use and to fly in support of the Museum in 1999. (Heritage Flight Museum)

North American P-51D-30NT Mustang (Serial No. 45-11525), C/N 124-48278, FF-525, “Val Halla”, flown by Bill Anders, Reg. No. N151AF, previously served with the Texas Air National Guard and with the Indonesian Air Force. Donated by Bill to the museum when the museum was started in 1996, “Val-Halla” reflects the the colors of the 57th FIS (Fighter Interceptor Squadron), the Black Knights. This is the squadron Bill flew F-89’s with back in 1958. Bill raced this plane at Reno in 1997, ’98 and ’99 as race #68, commemorating the year Apollo 8 went to the moon. His best showing with this airplane was on a gusty race Sunday in ’97, taking third in the Unlimited Class Silver race. This airplane is named ‘Val-Halla’ to honor Bill’s wife (and museum secretary) Valerie. The name also reflects the fond memories Bill has for the time he spent in Iceland and the year he spent as Ambassador to Norway. Val-Halla is Viking heaven and Bill’s Air Force call sign was “Viking.” Donated to the Heritage Flight Museum by Bill & Valerie Anders in 1996. (Heritage Flight Museum)
