North American P-51D Mustangs assigned to the 174th Fighter Squadron, Iowa National Guard take off at the airport in Sioux City, Iowa in the spring of 1948.  The Mustangs were the first aircraft assigned to the newly organized air arm of the Iowa National Guard when it was first organized in 1946.

Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star assigned to the 174th Fighter Squadron, Iowa Air National Guard is on the ramp in Sioux City, Iowa in July, 1955. The Air National Guard squadron received the F-80 after the unit returned to Sioux City following an activation during the Korean War.

Republic F-84E Thunderjet assigned to the Iowa Air National guard while at the Air National Guard gunnery completion in 1956.  As a component of the 132nd Fighter Interceptor Wing the 174th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Sioux City flew the F-84 until 1958. During that time the 174th was awarded the Spaatz Trophy as the most outstanding Air National Guard squadron in the nation.

Republic RF-84 Thunderflash (Serial No. 51-1879) on the ramp in Sioux City, Iowa dubbed “Sioux City Sue”, 174th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Iowa Air National Guard, ca 1950s.  The name “Sioux City Sue” was adopted from the 1945 song by country artist Dick Thomas.

General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon’s assigned to the 185th Fighter Wing, Sioux City, Iowa on the ramp at Cold Lake, Alberta, participating in the multinational air exercise “Maple Flag” on 12 June 2001.  The Iconic Gothic Bat tail flash, created by 185th graphic artist Technical Sgt. Frank Rosales, proudly displays the unit’s nickname “Bats” that was earned when the unit was in Vietnam.
