Warplanes of the USA: Colorado, Denver, Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum

Denver, Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, Hangar Number 1, Building 401, Lowry Campus, 7711 East Academy Blvd, Denver, Colorado, 80220.  Tel: 303-360-5360; FAX: 303-5328.

The museum is located at the site of the former Lowry AFB, 7711 East Academy Blvd, Denver, Colorado.  During the Second World War a great number of aircrew trained at Lowry AFB.  A Douglas B-18 Bolo was the first aircraft to land at Lowry after it was paved.  C-47s flew here, and a number of flight engineers trained on B-17s, B-24s and B-29s here.  Air operations ceased at Lowry as the city grew up around it in 1965.  The WORA&SM is Denver’s first Aerospace Museum, and is the Official Air and Space Museum of the State of Colorado as designated by the Colorado State Legislature (HB 97-1269)  The museum is Denver’s newest major historical and educational facility, and has been organized to remind the aviation minded of the rich history of flight in the Rocky Mountain region.  The museum also serves to teach the younger generation about the science of aviation and space travel.  With 30 aircraft and special exhibits, there is something of interest in the museum for everyone.

Douglas B-18B (SN 37-530, originally a B-18A) with the MAD tail boom. The Douglas B-18 Bolo is an American twin-engined heavy bomber which served with the United States Army Air Corps and the Royal Canadian Air Force (as the Digby) during the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Bolo was developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company from their DC-2 as a replacement for the Martin B-10.By 1940 standards, it was slow, had an inadequate defensive armament, and carried too small a bomb load. By 1942, surviving B-18s were relegated to antisubmarine, training and transport duties. A B-18 was one of the first USAAF aircraft to sink a German U-boat, U-654 on 22 August 1942 in the Caribbean.
