Buckley AFB (formerly ANGB) is located eight miles East of Denver. It is home to the 140th Wing (ANG), which flies F-16A Fighting Falcon fighters; HQ Colorado ANG; 227th Air Traffic Control Flight (ANG); 240th Civil Engineering Flight (ANG); Navy Reserve; Marine Corps Reserve; ARNG; and Air Force Units. The ANGB was activated on the 1st of April 1942 as a gunnery training facility. The ANG assumed control from the US Navy in 1959. The base is named for Lt. John H. Buckley, a National Guardsman who was killed in France on the 27th of September 1918. The base was re-designated an Air Force Base on the 2nd of October 2000. A number of helicopters formerly on display at Buckley have been moved, possibly to Greely.
