Bell UH-1M Iroquois (Serial No. 66-15186), ET, c/n 1914. 66-15186 was originally a US Army helicopter, and served with several different Army units in Vietnam from December 1967 – June 1970. It was acquired by the AF Armament Museum in December 1999. It is depicted in the paint scheme of the UH-1N helicopters that are currently flown by the 46th Test Wing, Eglin AFB, FL. The tail number of one of the unit’s helicopters will be assigned when one of them is retired.

Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress bombers of the 381st Training Group from RAF Ridgewell, en route to a target over Nazi-occupied Europe. The aircraft marked “VE” belong to the 532nd Bomb Squadron, the ones marked “MS” to the 535th BS. In front is B-17G-20-BO 42-31443 (“Friday the 13th”). This aircraft was shot down by German fighters on mission to Oschersleben, Germany on 22 February 1944 and crashed near Bielefeld, four of the crew became POWs, six were killed.

Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress (Serial No. 44-83863), painted as (Serial No. 44-6106). 44-83863 was built in 05 July 1945 for the USAAF, transferred to the US Navy on 14 July 1945, sold on 02 December 1957 for use as a forest fire tanker, traded back to the USAF Museum in 1976. It is painted as a bomber which flew with the 96th Bombardment Group (BG), the 96th BG would later become the 96th Test Wing (TW) on 18 July 2012. The 96th Test Wing is Eglin AFB,FL.

55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing – Boeing RB-47H-1-BW Stratojet (Serial No. 53-4296), at Eielson AFB, Alaska. This aircraft was retired to storage on 29 Dec 1967, and was the last USAF B-47 to serve. Now at USAF Armament Museum, Eglin AFB. FL. At one stage, it had its nose modified to test F-111 radar.

Boeing RB-47H Stratojet (Serial No. 53-4296). 53-4296 differed somewhat in equipment on board and carried six crewmembers. This particular aircraft served with the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Forbes AFB, KS. And was the last operational RB-47 in the USAF; when flown to Davis Monthan AFB, Arizona on 29 December 1967 for storage. It is painted as a B-47E bomber used during the 1950-1960s. Item of interest – During the early days of Eglin Gulf Test Range, several B-47s were converted to target drones for the Bomarc Missile Program.

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress (Serial No. 58-0185), c/n 464253, “El Lobo”. 58-0185 was first assigned to the 4135th Strategic Wing (SAC) at Eglin AFB, Fl in September 1959. It was last flown by the 2nd Bombardment Wing (SAC) at Barksdale AFB, LA. During its time at Barksdale AFB, this aircraft flew missions during Desert Storm. During Desert Storm the B-52s completed approximately 1,620 sorties, in fact, the B-52s managed to drop almost a third of the entire tonnage of bombs dropped by US aircraft.

Cessna O-2A Skymaster (Serial No. 67-21331), painted as (Serial No. 68-6864). 68-6864 is painted with the black paint scheme used to fly night missions over sites on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Viet Nam. It was assigned to various units during the war in Southeast Asia from Jan 1968 to Mar 1972.

Douglas AC-47D Skytrain/Spooky (Serial No. 44-76486), c/n 32818, (BuNo. 39103), painted as (Serial No. 43-49010), OS. 44-76486 is painted as AC-47D (Serial No. 43-49010) which was one of the first twenty C-47Ds converted to its AC-47D configuration by Air International at Miami, FL. 43-49010 was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron, 14th Special Operations Wing, Udorn RTAFB, Thailand during the Vietnam War from 1969 – 1970.

And it was assigned to the Armament Development Center (AF Systems Command), Eglin AFB, FL in May 1982. Its last assignment was to the 3246th Test Wing (AFSC), Eglin AFB, FL on September 1989. This aircraft is painted in the 46th Test Wing color scheme stationed here at Eglin AFB, FL.

Lockheed F-104D/TF Starfighter (Serial No. 57-1331A). 57-1331, was last flown by the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, CA in support of the X-15 program. Only 21 F-104Ds were produced for use by the USAF. Eglin AFB, FL had 22 F-104As assigned here. They were converted to QF-104 target drones, all flew out of Eglin AFB, Fl.

Twin M61 Vulcan cannons on Spectre gunship, USAF Armaments Museum. The M61 Vulcan is a hydraulically or pneumatically driven, six-barrel, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm rounds at an extremely high rate.

Lockheed AC-130A Hercules Spectre Gunship (Serial No. 53-3129), c/n 182-3001, “First Lady“. 53-3129 is the first C-130 to come off the production line in 1953, and was the original prototype of what was to become a long line of C-130 aircraft, it is affectionately dubbed “The First Lady”. It was one of five AC-130A gunships retired during an official ceremony, the other aircraft went to the storage. The 711th Special Operations Squadron of the 919th Special Operations Wing at Duke Field, FL was the last unit to fly this magnificent aircraft prior to its retirement on 10 September 1995, after 40 years of faithful service to its country.

Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird (Serial No. 61-7959), c/n 2010, “The Big Tail”. 61-7959, also known as “Big Tail”, came off the assembly line like any other SR-71 when it was rolled out on 16 August 1965. But it was chosen as the platform for a new set of sensor equipment to be carried in a nine-foot extension from the rear of the aircraft in 1975. On 3 December 1975, the “Big Tail” flew for the first time. The tests demonstrated that there was little performance loss, but that the new sensor equipment proved of little advantage. The program was dropped, this aircraft was last flown on 29 October 1976 and is the only “Big Tail” in existence.

Martin EB-57B Canberra Night Intruder (Serial No. 52-1516), c/n 099. 52-1516 was last flown by the 158th Air National Guard stationed at Burlington, VT. Only 22 B-57Bs were converted to EB-57Bs. The B-57 saw service in Vietnam, out of 94 B-57s assigned to the Vietnam theatre – 51 were lost in combat. This aircraft is being depicted in its black “Night Intruder” paint scheme, as a B-57B assigned to the 8th Bomb Squadron, 35th Tactical Fighter Wing while stationed at Phan Rang AB, Vietnam.

McDonnell F-101B Voodoo (Serial No. 56-0250), c/n 238, AIM-4 Falcon missile mounted under the fuselage in a rotary missile bay. 56-0250 is one of only two F-101Bs that were modified to be used in special tests for development purposes. This aircraft was last flown by the 4440th Aircraft Delivery Group at Langley AFB, VA.

McDonnell RF-4E Phantom II (Serial No. 67-0452), c/n 3003, ET. 64-0817 was last flown by the 3246th Test Wing at Eglin AFB, FL on 5 May 1986. It was given to the AF Armament Museum for display. It is being depicted as F-4C S/N 64-0813, an aircraft which was assigned to the 12th TFW. This is in tribute to a “tough” aircraft and the first unit to use it in combat.

McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle (Serial No. 74-0124), c/n 100/A085, “Gulf Spirit“, OT. 74-0124 was last flown by the 4484th Test Squadron (TAC) at Eglin AFB, FL. It is being depicted as the 33d Fighter Wing Commander’s aircraft. During Operation Desert Storm, the 33d Fighter Wing led all other units with the number of enemy aircraft shot down (16). During Operation Desert Storm the F-15 kill ratio was 26 – 0, this is a tribute to an outstanding aircraft and the personnel that fly and maintain it.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21F-13 Fishbed (Serial No. 85), c/n 014. This formerly Indonesian MIG-21F-13 S/N 85 was identified by the USAF as a “YF-110B Fishbed C” USAF (Serial No. 14). It is depicted in the USSR camouflage paint scheme used by the 4477th Test & Evaluation Squadron “the Red Eagles” during the mid-80’s. It was used during Project Constant Peg, the purpose of which was exposure of USAF, USN, and USMC pilots to enemy technology and tactics.

North American B-25J Mitchell (Serial No. 44-30854), painted as 02344, c/n 108-34129. 44-30854 was delivered on 08 March 1945, it was modified to a TB-25N in March 1954 and was the last B-25 when dropped from USAF inventory on June 1960. It is being depicted as B-25B S/N 40-2344 flown by General (then LtCol) James H. Doolittle during the “Tokyo Raid” mission. The Doolittle Raiders trained for their secret mission at Eglin Field (now Eglin AFB), FL. This aircraft was presented to the AF Armament Museum by the cities of Valparaiso and Niceville, FL on 15 September 1975.

North American F-51D Mustang (Serial No. 68-15796) built by the Cavalier Aircraft Corp. on 12 April 1968 for the US Army as a chase plane for the Cheyenne helicopter project. This aircraft is being depicted in the Second World War colours of the P-51D Mustang (Serial No. 44-13571) flown by MGen (then Capt) Henry B. Kucheman, Jr. while he was with the 354th Fighter Squadron in Steeple Morden, England. MGen Kucheman was Commander of the Armament Development and Test Center, Eglin AFB, Florida from Nov 1972 – Sep 1975.

North American F-86F Sabre (Serial No. 52-5513), at one time painted as (Serial No. 51-2831), c /n 193-242, FU-831, now painted as (Serial No. 51-2910), “Beautious Butch II” with 16 red star kill markings. 52-5513, was donated to the AF Armament Museum by Gen Choo Young Bock from the Republic of Korea Air Force. This jet depicts the F-86F Sabre (Serial No. 51-2910) flown by Captain Joseph McConnell who achieved triple-ace status (16) MIG-15 kills while stationed with the 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Korea during the Korean Conflict. The 39th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was later designated as the 39th Flight Test Squadron on Eglin AFB that is now part of the 40th Test Squadron. This display is a tribute to the F-86 Sabre and to Captain McConnell the leading ace of the Korean War and to all of the men and women that served during the Korean conflict.

North American F-100C Super Sabre (Serial No. 54-1986), painted as 57-0951, c/n 217-247, SS. 54-1986 was last flown by the Armament Development and Test Center at Eglin AFB. This F-100C is being depicted as F-100F S/N 56-3954 flown by Col (then Major) George “Bud” Day. On 26 August 1967, Major Day was flying a “Misty FAC” mission when he was shot down. He was captured and held as a Prisoner of War for the next 67 months. On March 4, 1976, Colonel Day was presented the Medal of Honor by President Gerald Ford.

Northrop F-89D Scorpion (Serial No. 53-2610). 53-2610 was delivered to the 32nd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (ADC) at Otis AFB,MA on August 1955. It was last flown by the 119th Fighter Group (ANG) at Hector Field, ND on October 1966. This aircraft has a AIR-2A Genie rocket loaded on the wing which only the F-89J Model was modified to carry.

Republic P-47N-5-RE Thunderbolt (Serial No. 44-89320), “Expected Goose“, on display inside the museum. 44-89320 was one of the last production Thunderbolts built at Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, NY. It is being displayed in the markings of the 463rd Fighter Squadron, 507th Fighter Group while stationed at Ie Shima Island near Okinawa in the Pacific Ocean. This aircraft is one of only a few P-47s still in flying condition today.

Republic F-84F Thunderstreak (Serial No. 51-9495), painted as 51495, FS-495. 51-9495 is painted in the 401st Fighter-Bomber Wing’s colours. The 401st FBW was stationed at England AFB, LA and had deployments to Eglin AFB, FL. The F-84F brought stardom to the 401st when they participated in the filming of the “The McConnell Story”, eight aircraft were painted blue with MIG-15 markings to simulate enemy aircraft during the Korean conflict in the aerial combat scenes of the movie.

Republic F-105D Thunderchief (Serial No. 58-1155), c/n D10, JV, painted as (Serial No. 59-1171), inside the museum. 58-1155 is painted as F-105D (Serial No. 59-1771) flown by Capt Peter Foley, the third F-105 pilot to survive 200 missions over North Vietnam. Capt Foley was assigned to the 469th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat RTAFB, Thailand.

Sikorsky MH-53M Pave Low IV, (Serial No. 73-1652). 73-1652 was last assigned to the 16th Special Operations Wing (AFSOC) at Hurlburt Field, Florida. This helicopter was flown in to its final resting place on 5 Sep 2008. This helicopter was assigned to the 55th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron (ARRS) at Eglin AFB from Jun 1976 – Jul 1980. During its stay at Eglin AFB; it was part of the Recovery Team that was sent to Jonestown, Guyana for the recovery of the 903 American bodies in the Jim Jones incident. This helicopter was flown for 34 years before being retired from service. The MH-53J/M fleet was retired in September 2008.
