A Hurricane in flight without a spinner is usually a tell-tale sign that the aircraft is an RCAF Mk. XII. This nice color image of Canadian Car & Foundry Hurricane Mk.XII RCAF 5625 in flight is a prime example. While CanCar did eventually develop a spinner to fit this variant’s engine-propeller combination, very few of them made it into service. The slight extra drag which resulted from the lack of a spinner apparently did not significantly reduce the aircraft’s performance.

This aircraft was built at Victory Aircraft, Malton in July 1945 and was later converted to an RCAF Mk. 10MR configuration. In 1952 it has a serious accident and received a replacement wing centre section from a Lancaster that had flown in the air war over Germany. It served as a maritime patrol aircraft, with No. 405 Squadron, Greenwood, Nova Scotia and No. 107 Rescue Unit, Torbay, Newfoundland for many years, until it was retired from the RCAF in late 1963. With help from the Sulley Foundation in 1977, it was acquired from the Royal Canadian Legion in Goderich, Ontario, where it had been on outside display. Eleven years passed before it was completely restored and flew again on 24 Sep 1988. The Lancaster is dedicated to the memory of P/O Andrew Mynarski, VC, and is referred to as the “Mynarski Memorial Lancaster”. It is painted in the colours of his aircraft (Serial No. KB726), VR-A, which flew with RCAF No. 419 (Moose) Squadron.

On 15 September 2009, the missile was removed by the National Museum of the United States Air Force, which had loaned the weapon to the city since 1979 when it was erected by the North Bay Kiwanis Club as a historic memorial. The missile had deteriorated to the point where it could no longer be maintained. The missile represented a part of the community’s history that intrinsically tied it to global events and a positive relationship with the U. S. A total of 56 of the nuclear-armed surface-to-air interceptor missiles were in sevice in Canada at North Bay and La Macaza, Quebec, from 1961 to 1972. In North Bay, there were 28 missiles located at the former Bomarc missile base,- the site on Highway 11 north of the city which eventually became the Canadore College Heliport.

Canadian Warplanes II
Military Aircraft flown by Canadians from the beginning to the 100th Anniversary of the RCAF in 2024

This aviation handbook is designed to be used as a quick reference to the classic military heritage aircraft that have been flown by members of the Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and the Canadian Forces. The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active Canadian squadrons both at home and overseas. 100 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to Canadian service aircraft. For those who like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museum’s current inventory or on display as gate guardians throughout Canada and overseas. The aircraft presented in this edition are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. Although many of Canada’s heritage warplanes have completely disappeared, a few have been carefully collected, restored and preserved, and some have even been restored to flying condition. This guide-book should help you to find and view Canada’s Warplane survivors.
