3rd Super Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery, supporting a 1st Canadian Army attack with a 240-mm M1 Howitzer. It has a 22 foot barrel and fired 360 pound shells into the Siegfried defences and on to the Rhine, 8 Feb 1945. This howitzer could fire a 360 lb (160 kg) high explosive projectile out to a range of 25,225 yards (23,066 m). The M1 howitzer saw considerable action during the war in Europe due to its effectiveness against difficult targets such as heavy concrete fortifications.
