Warplane Survivors USA: Arizona

During the twentieth century, civil and military aviation has played a prominent role in the history and development of Arizona. Commercial operators have exploited the advantages offered by aircraft to overcome its unique challenges of geography and climate. By virtue of Arizonas dry climate and excellent storage facilities, as well as its clear air and wide open spaces in the Southwest (some might say Old West) area of the continental USA, a wide variety of military aircraft have been based or stored there through the years. The list of military aircraft types that made up the tapestry of Arizona aviation is as extensive as the list of legendary figures who have contributed to its amazing history. While most of the military aircraft types no longer grace the airspace over Arizona, many can be viewed in their former splendor as they stand as gate guards; museum exhibits, or as they stand mothballed in the Boneyard. This booklet provides a comprehensive guide to where these aircraft can be found. Finally, the descriptions of the recovery, restoration and preservation efforts stand as a tribute to the many volunteers who have devoted time, energy and financial support to ensure this rich heritage is preserved.

Marana. Pinal Airpark is an airport located in Pinal County, seven miles northwest of the central business district of Marana, a city in Pima County, Arizona.  Its main purpose is to act as a “boneyard” for civilian commercial aircraft.  Old airplanes are stored there with the hope that the dry desert climate will prevent any form of corrosion in case the aircraft is pressed into service in the future.  Even so, many aircraft which are brought there wind up being scrapped.  Nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base provides the same service to the U.S. military.  The majority of the aircraft at Pinal Airpark formerly belonged to Northwest Airlines, though many other airlines are represented as well.  Internet: Wikipedia.

Tucson, 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (Boneyard).  Contact: Lynda McWilliams, Pima Air & Space Museum.  Tel: 520-574-0462.  Tours only, admission $5.

The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG) is a one-of-a-kind specialized facility within the Air Force Materiel Command structure. 309 AMARG provides critical aerospace maintenance and regeneration capabilities for Joint and Allied/Coalition warfighters in support of global operations and agile combat support for a wide range of military operations.

Immediately after World War II, the Army’s San Antonio Air Technical Service Command established a storage facility for B-29 and C-47 aircraft at Davis-Monthan AFB. Today, this facility is the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG), which has grown to include more than 4,400 aircraft and 13 aerospace vehicles from the Air Force, Navy-Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard, and several federal agencies including NASA. Tucson, Pima Air & Space Museum, 6000 E. Valencia Road, Tucson, AZ 85706.  Tel: 602-574-0462/602-574-9658.  The museum is open daily 9-5.  Admission $7.50.  Internet  E-mail:

The Pima Air & Space Museum is the world’s largest, non-government funded aerospace museum.  The museum was opened to the public in May 1976 with 75 aircraft on display.  It now contains a collection of over 250 aircraft occupying 80 acres of land. The entire museum property covers about 150 acres.  The museum is adjacent to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

The base was named in honor of Lieutenants Samuel H. Davis and Oscar Monthan, two Tucsonans and World War I–era pilots who died in separate military aircraft accidents. Davis, who died in a Florida aircraft accident in 1921, attended the University of Arizona prior to enlisting in the Army in 1917. Monthan enlisted in the Army as a private in 1917, was commissioned as a ground officer in 1918, and later became a pilot. He was killed in a crash of a Martin bomber in Hawaii in 1924.  Internet: Wikipedia.

The Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), affiliated with the base, also known as the “Boneyard”, is one of the largest aircraft storage and preservation facilities in the world. Bus tours of the boneyard leave from the museum several times a day from Monday to Friday.  The Titan Missile Museum is run by the Pima Air Museum.  It is located south of Tucson and features a Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile still in its silo. Tours of the above-ground and underground installations around the missile are available.   Internet: Wikipedia.

The 390th Memorial Museum is located on the grounds of the Pima Air and Space Museum.  The 390th Museum contains the beautifully restored B-17G “I’ll Be Around,” a General James H. Doolittle exhibit, an 11×23 foot mural of “Top Cover for the J Group,” probably the most recognized painting of World War II, an Honor Wall, A Gallery of Crews, art and aircraft models, and many items of memorabilia and artifacts. The Joseph A. Moller Library, a part of the Museum, contains over 90,000 pages of 390th combat history, over 10,000 photographs and is a research center for the Air Campaign of Central Europe.  Internet:

Winslow.  Meteor Crater Visitor’s Center. 20 miles West of Winslow off Hwy I-40.  Meteor Crater Enterprises, Inc., PO Box 0070, Flagstaff, AZ 86002-0070.  Phone: 1-800-289-5898.  Internet:  E-mail:

Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater located approximately 43 miles (69 km) east of Flagstaff, near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States.  Because the US Department of the Interior Division of Names commonly recognizes names of natural features derived from the nearest post office, the feature acquired the name of “Meteor Crater” from the nearby post office named Meteor.  The site was formerly known as the Canyon Diablo Crater, and scientists generally refer to it as Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact.  The crater is privately owned by the Barringer family via their Barringer Crater Company.  The owners of the Crater proclaim it to be “the first proven, best-preserved meteorite crater on earth.”

Meteor Crater lies at an elevation of about 1,740 m (5,709 ft) above sea level. It is about 1,200 m (4,000 ft) in diameter, some 170 m deep (570 ft), and is surrounded by a rim that rises 45 m (150 ft) above the surrounding plains. The center of the crater is filled with 210–240 m (700–800 ft) of rubble lying above crater bedrock.  One of the interesting features of the crater is its squared-off outline, believed to be caused by pre-existing regional jointing (cracks) in the strata at the impact site.

The crater was created about 40,000 years ago during the Pleistocene epoch when the local climate on the Colorado Plateau was much cooler and damper. At the time, the area was an open grassland dotted with woodlands inhabited by woolly mammoths, giant ground sloths, and camels.  It was probably not inhabited by humans; the earliest confirmed record of human habitation in the Americas dates from long after this impact.

The object that excavated the crater was a nickel-iron meteorite about 50 meters (54 yards) across, which impacted the plain at a speed of several kilometers per second. The speed of the impact has been a subject of some debate.  Modeling initially suggested that the meteorite struck at a speed of up to 20 kilometers per second (45,000 mph), but more recent research suggests the impact was substantially slower, at 12.8 kilometers per second (28,600 mph). It is believed that about half of the impactor’s 300,000 tonnes (330,000 short tons) bulk was vaporized during its descent, before it hit the ground.  The impactor itself was mostly vaporized; very little of the meteorite remained within the pit that it had excavated.  Internet: Wikipedia.
