Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks flown by the Texas National Guard respond to help fight the wildfires in North Texas. The helicopters were launched out of the Austin Army Aviation Support Facility.  The aircraft are equipped with a Bambi Bucket, which carries over 600 gallons of water, to fight fires.

Many examples of aircraft that saw service in the various armed forces of the United States are currently being restored to flying status or preserved in museums in the state of Texas. Some of them have significant war records, and a few are currently standing as gate guardians outside their former airbases. These Warbirds are a permanent part of our modern history, and they deserve to be remarked upon and remembered.

This handbook provides a simple checklist of where the surviving military aircraft in Texas are located now, along with a few photographs and a brief history of their service in the US military. This book should spark your interest in some of the military aviation history that can be found in this warm and friendly state on America s Gulf Coast. Texas Warbird Survivors is specifically intended to provide a where are they guide for residents and visitors to Texas who are interested in its rich resources of historical military aircraft. Contact numbers are provided for the museums, should you be interested in learning more about each aircraft. Perhaps you will then choose to visit these museums in order to appreciate the rich resources of aviation heritage preserved on your behalf.

Bleriot XI, full scale mock-up as flown by Katherine Stinson's aviation school, based at Stinson Field before the First World War.  Stinson was the fourth woman in the United States to obtain a pilots certificate, flying alone after only four hours of instruction.  Moving to San Antonio for the better flying weather, she and her sister Majorie started an aviation school giving flying instruction.  In 1915 she became the first woman to perform a loop and in 1917 she set a non-stop distance record by flying from San Francisco to San Diego.  She also inspired her brothers to later form the well known Stinson Aeroplane Company.  The Bleriot this replica represents was used by the school and when sold in 1915.  The price was “one city lot, one Chalmers automobile and an unknown amount of cash.”  Stinson Field was named in the family’s honour and is now the second oldest general aviation airport in the United States.

Lockheed P-38F-1-LO Lightning (Serial No. 41-7630), c/n 222-5757, "Glacier Girl", Reg. No. N17630.  Rodney Lewis, Lewis Air Legends.

This P-38F-1 flown by 1st Lt. Harry L. Smith, Jr., 94th Fighter Squadron, was one of six P-38 fighters of the 1st Fighter Group escorting two B-17 bombers on a ferry flight to England as part of Operation Bolero on 15 July 1942.  While en route over Greenland, bad weather caused the eight aircraft to turn back, the entire flight attempting to land together before they ran out of fuel.  Although one P-38 overturned, the flight successfully belly-landed.  The crews were rescued within a few days, but the airplanes were abandoned and, over the years, covered by ice.  A few attempts to salvage the airplanes were made but were unsuccessful.  Eventually, Roy Shoffner, a businessman from Middlesboro, Kentucky, acquired the salvage rights and in 1992, 50 years after the planes landed, a P-38 recovery mission was undertaken.  Using photos taken by the original crews while they were awaiting rescue as well as modern seismographic equipment, the salvage workers located the buried squadron and selected the least damaged of the planes.  They reached it by boring a hole using hot water through the layer of ice 268 feet thick.  The airplane was transported to Middlesboro, where a ten-year restoration began using many parts from late model aircraft.  Nicknamed "Glacier Girl", the restored P-38F Lightning made its first post-restoration flight on 26 October 2002.  (Wikipedia)

Supermarine Spitfire Mk. VB, RAF (Serial No. BL628), "Marion", Reg. No. N628BL.

BL628 was built at Castle Bromwich in the Birmingham region as a VB with two 20-mm cannon and 4 303 Machine guns.  It was sent to RCAF 401 Squadron at Gravesend in February 1942.  It became the mount of Canadian G. B. Murray ("Scotty") and he named it "Marion" after his girlfriend.

Scotty flew it for 100 flights during the period to August 1942 with a total of 99.5 hours on fighter sweeps over France and Holland.  He damaged 2 FW190 and destroyed one in this aircraft.  During this time he shared the aircraft on an occasional basis with other famous Canadians including the CO, Squadron Leader Keith Hodson, the famous Eagle Squadron leader Colonel Don Blakeslee who was first with 401 Squadron, then moved to the USAAF squadron, Don Morrison, Ian Ormston, Ian McLennan, and many others.  BL628 had many actions against FW190.  The aircraft subsequently served with a number of squadrons including an American squadron for a short time.

After this it was transferred to the Royal Navy and converted to a Hooked Spitfire in 1943.  In Belfast Ireland it was used to train 899 RN Squadron pilots before going to St Merryn in 1944 where it ended its career.  Restored in New Zealand, BL628 is currently on display with Lewis Air Legends in San Antonio, Texas.
